Defender calls for genuine partnership in development projects in Papua New Guinea

In a statement delivered during the 60th session of the Human Rights Council, Cressida Kuala, a human rights defender from Porgera Red Wara (River) Women's Association in Papua New Guinea, urged the Council to ensure that development projects in the affected communities are based on genuine partnership, co-ownership and benefit sharing.

Call for the full implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action

In the context of the presentation of a UN report on reparations, ISHR and Coalizão Negra por Direitos issued a joint statement urging States to fully implement the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, the UN’s blueprint to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance globally.

UN flags repression of defenders, including by Human Rights Council members

The UN Secretary-General’s annual report on reprisals shows that ‘targeted repression across borders appears to grow in scale and sophistication’ against defenders who cooperated with the United Nations. Notably, 10 of the 32 States reported to have retaliated against individuals or groups who sought to engage with the United Nations are sitting members of the Human Rights Council.

Human rights defender's story: Judi Aldalati from Syria

Judi Aldalati is a Syrian journalist, a researcher and human rights defender - and a participant in ISHR's 2025 Human Rights Defender Advocacy Programme. She told ISHR how seeing the early days of the Arab Spring led her to pursue the defence of human rights and shared her aspirations for the future of Syria amidst the uncertainty that has followed the collapse of the Assad regime.
